Mental Toughness:
“Mental toughness is having the psychological capability to perform and complete tasks whilst remaining undeterred by the external conditions imposed in you. Mental toughness can be a natural trait or developed through correct training and ultimately lies within the self-belief and motivation of an individual to complete the task even if it kills them”. Some people are born with mental toughness instilled within them. These are the people who have what it takes to become world class sports people or join the military’s elite. However this is something you can learn.
5 Characteristics of mental toughness:
-Composure – staying calm under pressure and being undeterred by external impositions.
-Focus – keeping your mind focused on the job in hand.
-Determination – having the will to finish what you have started, no matter how painful.
-Self-belief – knowing within yourself you can achieve your goal.
-Motivation – having the intrinsic motivation to push yourself without the need to rely on external forms of motivations such as friends and team mates.
Developing your mental toughness:
Ultimately, how strong your mind is comes down to you.
